Take Action to Save Fish Lake

Dear Barbara,

When the federal review panel gave the New Prosperity mine proposal a 2nd thumbs-down, it looked like the “dead mine walking” would finally be laid to rest.

Except the project keeps popping up again and again like the villain in a bad horror movie. Take action.

The scathing federal review found that the proposed gold/copper mine at pristine Fish Lake in the heart of Tsilhqot’in traditional territory would cause significant adverse effects on water quality, fish and wetland ecosystems. It also warned of impacts on the South Chilcotin grizzly bear population.

It should have been a slam dunk for the federal minister in charge, Leona Aglukkaq, to reject the mine.

But now the proponent, Taseko Mines Ltd, is putting pressure on the federal government with disingenuous claims of technical mistakes in the review process, and threats of lawsuits – bullying tactics unprecedented in the history of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. Meanwhile, the company still owes the federal government its share of the cost of the first review, back in 2010.

It’s time to put a stop to this nonsense. The mine proposal was studied twice, at vast public expense, and rejected based on submissions from both federal and provincial government scientists.

Take action now to show support for the Tsilhqot'in, and for this pristine wilderness area.  Tell Minister of Environment Leona Aglukkaq and Prime Minister Stephen Harper to save Fish Lake and reject the “New Prosperity” mine.

Abandoned Oil Pipelines What Lurks Below?

These photos were taken July 2012 in the historic Turner Valley, Alberta B. McPherson Controversy over new oil pipelines is reaching boiling point in many circles. Heated debate is taking place over the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway and Keystone Pipeline proposals. Safety, disruption to landowners  and more are being weighed against the money to be made transporting and selling petroleum products. It got me thinking about the old pipelines. What happens to a pipeline when it is too old to use or not needed? It’s a bit of an Alice in Wonderland scene. The US laws and regulations are different from ours in Canada. The Pipeline and Gas Journal is a source of information about abandoned pipelines in Texas. Apparently a pipeline in Texas may be abandoned by a company, but it still retains ownership and may choose to reactivate the line at a later date. B. McPherson What happens to all the abandoned pipelines? Oil pipelines have huge direct costs to build, but they also have many hidden costs. In spite of dire warnings by environmentalist the world is demanding ever greater supplies of the black gold. For those countries that have it and market it successfully, money comes rolling in. But at what cost? An oil pipeline is a hugely complex thing. Enbridge Corp. has been battling citizens in British Columbia over its proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline and the Keystone Pipeline in the US has been stalled for months.
